BEHIND THE WORDS
Cross Examination questions self-awarded status and success measured through cars, watches and jewellery. Religious imagery gives the title its double meaning, while the lyrics examine whether wealth can stand in for skill or character.
The song turns boast after boast into a question for the listener. Its argument is about the writing itself: products can decorate a verse, but they cannot supply its backbone.
"It's my season, man" Better car, better songs, look better, more women Bro gave himself the award Then presented it to himself Alright then
"I'm the best" - based on what, your own review? Five-line intro just applauding you Better car, better songs, better life, more girls That's four self-claims and not one proof
Whip so low that it's scraping cat's eyes That's not performance, your suspension's flat-lined Drifting in fifth hoping you don't capsize? Man said "I'm the best" then immediately "might die"
Jesus piece and she got baptized Religious wordplay with a backshot punchline Cross on your chain but the writing needs saving You gave her the piece - I'm giving yours examination
Beyblade spin, Ray J famous Two references old enough to claim maintenance O's, P's, Q's, RS, Day-Date Alphabet soup with a Rolex face
Jesus piece hanging off your chest Still can't resurrect these bars from death Cross on the chain, but the pen ain't blessed You said "I'm the best" - I came to cross-examine that
Big car, big watch, big claims, big flex Every verse needs material objects for breath You found God hanging diamonds on your neck I found holes in the scripture - Cross Examination
Three-piece rims on the E55 Left-hand drive - congratulations, it's an import, nice Used to watch Beamers while broke on the bus That part I respect, then you ruined it with stuff
Paper man banging a paper lady? Paper four times - mate, Shakespeare's shaking "Get my paper up, pay for things" - groundbreaking Whole eight bars sound like invoice training
Chasing the paper, "what's the deal?" Probably finance, judging by half these wheels All black dressed to kill - standard issue Then "dents in his chest like a Chesterfield" - tissue
Drapes on the Lexus, browning to your toes Gun so long it needs its own postcode Taco Bell, corn, guac, gringos You built that whole scheme from a takeaway window
Bread in the bag like ducks at a pond Finally - one bar where the bread belongs "Biggedy bucks long," she borrowed the ride Then filled it up wrong and the engine died
So all that money, all that automotive knowledge But you handed her diesel and skipped basic logic Tall Vin Diesel - that line's funny though First honest description since the intro
One hand wheel, one hand on your nuts That's not gangster, that's adjusting your trunks Beanie Sigel playing, black rims spinning Whole cinematic scene till your waistband's itching
Foot down, Max B, dodge blue, gain green Traffic-light bars over Evisu jeans Callaway C16, "fly" - alright Another supercar entered the rhyme for the night
Hit the griddy to the bank, reach Mont Blanc Standing on money? better hope notes stack strong Push-bike then, now clutch in the Bimmer That's growth - but the writing should've grown with the vehicle
Every success gets measured in trim Every character trait gets outsourced to rims Take the badges away, take the watches and chains What's left when the products stop finishing your phrase?
"Hanging out like belly" - okay, that's wild Y-front pants and American Dad - nice style Beer in his hand, heavy man on the telly You went from drug bars straight into Homer's belly
"Got my boy's back like spinal" Then spun like Lionel All night long on vinyl Three-song references holding one rhyme cycle
And that's the difference
You reference wealth I reference the writing You describe the purchase I describe why the line isn't striking
You need the Benz, the Rollie, the chain and the girl For every punchline to function in your world Take away the showroom, what survives in the verse? A cross with no saviour and a catalogue curse
You said better car - cool, drive it Better songs? let the listener decide it Look better? that's mirrors, not rhyming More women? Strange metric for lyrical timing
"I live better than you" - maybe, who knows? But wealth ain't a syllable, cars ain't a flow You can buy Day-Dates, imports and stones Can't finance cadence or lease a backbone
That Jesus piece doesn't make bars sacred Diamond cross doesn't mean God came and saved it You got baptized in your own applause Then walked on the beat like you wrote new laws
I don't need scripture tattooed in gold I just read what you wrote and exposed what it holds So keep the E55, the RS, the chain-
You brought the Jesus Piece
I brought the Cross Examination
